What Happens at LlamaLAN?

LAN action, quirky themes, tournaments, prizes, over dramatic story trailers with multiple endings and a room full of fun social people ready to show off their PCs and their skills!

Now the longer version. In this day of broadband and ever-improving netcode what makes LlamaLAN worthwhile?

We had humble beginnings in 2002 starting with a small LAN for 21 people, filling a home. Now, we typically host up to 40 players all on the same local network in a scout hut over three days. Each participant brings (or borrows) their own PC and connects to our network, playing a variety of multiplayer games. Giving everyone something to aim for, we organise diverse tournaments, awarding prizes for winners, for 1v1 deathmatchers, time trials, clans, and what we like to call The Big Teams.

Thanks to 'The Big Teams', it doesn't matter if you come with friends or are flying solo. The LAN is split into four big teams (Yellow, Red, Blue and Green) with 10 seats allocate to each. When you are fully paid, the choice of where you sit is yours. Regardless of where you sit, you will become a member of one of the four big teams and have the option to take part in the 'Big Games'. We give these tournaments a lot of focus; the team that performs the best in all Big Team tournaments over the whole weekend is declared the winning team of the entire event.

Since LlamaLAN XII (October 2009), LAN survivors have been treated to a cinematic trailer for the next event, and the trailer we show depends on which Big Team wins. The world's first LAN with multiple endings? Maybe. These 3D overdramatic parody-filled films also link one theme to the next.

Yes, each LlamaLAN event is themed. We and our attendees have had great fun with these - we've seen hordes of Pirates and Ninjas, zombies and survivors, post-apocalyptic desert warriors and even Hawaiian shirts... though not necessarily at the same time. Apart from giving us an excuse to look like lunatics for three days, these themes also help vary the games we use for official tournaments. The Hawaiian 'LlamaLAN VIII' featured 'Far Cry' as the main 1v1. During the post-apocalyptic 'LlamaLAN XIV', we tore up desolated cities in 'DIPRIP Warm Up'. Four bands turned it up to eleven in Rock Band during the spectacular 'LlamaLAN XI'. At 'LlamaLAN XII', we fought in 'Battlefield Pirates II' and even had time trials on the retro platformer 'Bruce Lee!'

The games we choose are influenced by the LAN's theme, but also by our gamers. We ask everyone who has a seat at an event to maintain their personal list of games via the website, with their favourites at the top. Each of these lists combine to rank which games are most available and which are the favourites. The aim here is to use games that we know most people have and enjoy so that we make our tournaments as accessible as possible. Plus, we're always on the lookout for freebies which make fun LAN games. As an example, the simple but insanely entertaining 'Armagetron Advanced' is almost always played at LlamaLAN.

We've had lots of good feedback; the social atmosphere is friendly and there's plenty going on. Some of our attendees, familiar with several UK LANs, regard LlamaLAN as one of the most fun. LlamaLANs are definately suited to fun-loving game players, whether young or old, whether LAN veterans or first-timers.
